April Member Spotlight - Westmoreland Cleanways

Westmoreland Cleanways operates a drive-thru, drop off center for hard to dispose of items – such as electronics, TVs, computers, printers, car & truck tires, glass jars & bottles, cardboard, and other paper items, metal appliances including refrigerators, washing machines, and styrofoam. Some items have a fee required to leave at our facility. See our website for a more detailed list of items we accept or call us at 724-879-4020. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to protect, restore, and maintain the environmental qualities of our county for the benefit of all who live, work, and visit herein.

This year, we began the weekly collection of household hazardous waste (HHW). Our center accepts HHW on Wednesdays during our open hours of 8 am to 1 pm. See our website for more information on the HHW we can accept – and the associated cost. Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling accomplishes its mission by sponsoring and promoting programs that address the proper disposal of solid waste through recycling, special collections, and the cleanup of illegal dumpsites and littered areas. We educate the public through presentations, print media, and the web.

Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling initiates and facilitates programs by bringing together a network of volunteers, industry leaders, and state and local government representatives to provide services in the most efficient and economical manner. Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling is funded by Westmoreland County, member fees, private donations, sponsorships, and grants. Volunteers donate time, energy, and expertise to carry out our mission.

Westmoreland Cleanways began as PA Cleanways in 1990 in Hempfield Township, Pennsylvania, to combat illegal dumping by coordinating the efforts of local residents, local businesses, and local government to clean up illegal dumpsites and keep them clean. By 1992, the need to expand beyond Westmoreland County caused PA Cleanways to form chapters throughout the state.

Westmoreland was the ORIGINAL chapter formed inside of PA Cleanways.
In 2005, PA CleanWays of Westmoreland County was reincorporated as Westmoreland Cleanways to strengthen its identity and commitment to its members, volunteers, sponsors, and funders in Westmoreland County.

In 2011, Westmoreland Cleanways was certified as an Affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, the attainment of which would “bring the power of America’s largest community improvement network to the Westmoreland County community attracting strategic partnerships and nationally recognized litter prevention, recycling, education, and beautification programs to benefit our community.

In 2014, Westmoreland Cleanways opened the Westmoreland Cleanways Recycling Center to better meet the needs of county residents. Now residents can recycle Hard-to-Recycle Items on a weekly base, instead of the 5 to 6 times a year that was previously available.

In 2015, Westmoreland Cleanways updated its name to Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling in recognition of its focus on recycling, not just litter/illegal dump cleanups.

In 2020, Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling moved to a larger facility at 355 Pleasant Unity Mutual Road, Greensburg, PA (Unity Township) in which to expand options for collecting additional types of recyclables. Future goals include a conference room for educational and community meetings, an outdoor classroom, and more.

Westmoreland Cleanways has been designated by the Westmoreland County Commissioners as the official recycling organization of Westmoreland County. As such, we are the County’s recycling coordinator and are charged with overseeing all municipal, commercial, and recycling activities in the county. Westmoreland Cleanways participates in St. Vincent College’s Bearcat B.E.S.T. program to offer real-life job skills training for individuals in this program. We partner with groups such as the Westmoreland Conservation District and Keep PA Beautiful as we help fulfill our mission goals together of restoring and maintaining the environmental qualities around us.

We offer and provide in-classroom education of recycling-related programs to all our area schools for any and all grade levels. Westmoreland Cleanways is proud of its membership in the GLLV Chamber of Commerce. We are always looking for ways to continue our support of our local communities and we thank GLLV Chamber of Commerce for keeping us connected with the communities we serve.
