October Member Spotlight: Latrobe Kinder-Schull
Latrobe Kinder-Schull is one of two site locations of Ligonier Valley Learning Center, Inc. The original site location is in Oak Grove, Ligonier. The Non- Profit Human Service Agency has been in operation since March, 1984. We have been involved with the community Chamber of Commerce (Ligonier and Latrobe) since our inception. Throughout the 37 years of Agency community service, the skilled teachers/clinicians have provided high quality early education programs to children as well as mental health counseling to children, youth and adults. Our mission includes providing a quality early childhood experience that prepares young children to be active, independent students who have knowledge of an appreciation for the natural world around them. At Agency currently employs 47 staff, services nearly 200 children and provides mental health counseling to approximately 100 clients.
At Latrobe Kinder-Schull, the teaching staff strive to provide a high-quality early learning inclusive experience that prepares young children to be active, independent students. The teaching staff provide a supportive, nurturing and encouraging environment for children and their families to develop positive relationships. Children discover new ideas and build upon their knowledge through play. The children experience a joy for learning. We believe children are capable of using their natural sense of wonder to construct knowledge about the world around them. When we appreciate the important role play serves, we give children the time and opportunity to fully realize all of their intellectual, emotional, and social potential. When play is permitted to be child driven, children practice decision-making skills, move at their own pace, discover their own areas of interest, and ultimately engage fully in the passions they wish to pursue. Latrobe-Kinder Schull is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The facility also has the highest Keystone 4 Star rating.
Latrobe Kinder-Schull is housed in the creatively designed large and spacious children's center at 320 McKinley Avenue, Latrobe. The layout of this amazing building includes a separate and cozy Infant Nursery, (2) Toddler Classrooms and (7) Preschool Classrooms, a Cafeteria/Kitchen and an Administration Office. With much excitement, the Non-Profit Agency administration was able to purchase the large building next to the Latrobe Kinder-Schull at 326 McKinley Avenue, in November 2020. Renovation work is currently being completed in the newly purchased building to accommodate 2 additional large and spacious classrooms, a large inclusive gym, counseling rooms and teacher meeting/office space. All Labor and Industry Fire and Panic Code regulations are being adhered to. In addition, all safety and health protocol guidelines from Department of Human Services, Department of Education and Office of Child Development and Early Learning are being followed for the well-being of the children and staff.
Ligonier Valley Learning Center, Inc., has been a Grant recipient of the Pa Pre-K Counts Grant Funded Program for the past 13 years. Due to the Grant Funds, income eligible families can receive free Pre-K Counts programming for their preschool child Monday through Friday 9am-3pm at the Latrobe and Ligonier Site Locations. At the Latrobe Kinder-Schull, State Grant funds were also received for income eligible families to receive free high-quality childcare for their toddler children.
We greatly appreciate being a member of the Latrobe-Laurel Valley Chamber. The monthly Chamber newsletters help us keep updated on local community businesses and events. Making community connections and communicating with local business owners is very important to us. Most of our referrals come from word of mouth within the community. To us, being a Chamber member means being part of an outstanding community.
